Online reviews provide a reference check for consumers and also serve as a marketing tool for businesses. Customers rely on social media to share their experiences and review of products and services. This case study provides a brief insight into the rights of consumers to provide fair reviews and answers the question if a negative online review can constitute defamation.
On August 27, 2019, Olawale made a tweet complaining on the bad service from Suburban Fiber Company Limited (“Suburban”) and the non-responsiveness from their customer service. Months later, Suburban sued Olawale for making an alleged defamatory post and also claimed that Olawale was not a direct customer of their service to make such post.
